Miami Dolphins Round 3, Pick 81: Hunter Long, TE, Boston College

Grade: B-

After the Miami Dolphins 2021 NFL Draft ended on Day 2, we knew more than ever before what type of team they were building. With rumors of the Dolphins coveting Kyle Pitts in round one. After Atlanta took him at No. 3 and fans likely expected them to address the position at some point.

Before you stop reading, no, I’m not comparing Hunter Long to Kyle Pitts, but it’s certain that Long will play a major role in the offense. Tua’s a young quarterback looking to play quarterback as a point guard distributing type passer. Getting him another big body who could threaten the seam was a smart idea.

Though fans may wonder why Long at the No. 81 spot. After all, they have Mike Gesicki. The Fins looking to run the ball with heavy packages and 12 personnel.

Don’t expect Long to block often for the Fins. The 6-5, 254-pound tight end is a good runner who can separate underneath. He has reliable hands, and he’s solid jumping up, competing for 50/50 balls.

Long can lineup right now next to Gesicki and give the Fins a dynamic duo at tight end. After picking Jaylen Waddle in the first round, this looks like a solid investment to ensure they’re 2020 No. 5 pick is protected and given the weapons to do so.
