1. Tyler Coyle, S, Purdue

Normally with a team performing as poorly on defense as the Cowboys did in 2020, it would be nothing but defensive players to watch for on a list like this. However, Dallas made it hard on any undrafted free agent defender to make the roster when they used eight of their 11 draft picks on defenders.

Having said that, they elected not to use any picks on any players at arguably their weakest position — safety. It could be argued that Israel Mukuamu could be converted to safety but he played cornerback for South Carolina, so even if that’s the case, they already started him behind the eight ball.

As for their current roster, the Cowboys appear set to start Damontae Kazee who is coming off an Achilles injury, and Donovan Wilson, who is promising but still has just 10 career starts. Behind them is Reggie Robinson — who is also a converted corner ‚— Darian Thompson, Steven Parker, and Jayron Kearse. They also have Keanu Neal, but the insistence from this staff is that the former Atlanta strong safety is moving to linebacker.

That means safety is still a sore spot which could open the door for Tyler Coyle from Purdue. Originally a starter for Connecticut, he had just 13 tackles in three games last season but was good for 261 tackles and three picks in three seasons with the Huskies.

The question with him is whether or not he stays at safety. He’s considered a candidate for the hybrid safety role, which is apparently locked down by Keanu Neal.

Still, the depth as safety is questionable enough that he could convince them to give him a shot with a good camp.
