Urban Meyer pours cold water on Tim Tebow reunion with Jaguars
While Tim Tebow joining the Jaguars and reuniting with Urban Meyer would be the talk of the NFL, it might not be happening anytime soon.
Amid a wild buildup to the 2021 NFL Draft was a report that former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and, most recently, New York Mets outfielder prospect Tim Tebow was meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars for a workout… as a tight end. Any return to football for the recently retired baseball prospect, however, would be at tight end.
The fit with the Jaguars, of course, would make a ton of sense. Jacksonville hired Urban Meyer to be their head coach this offseason, who just so happened to be Tebow’s head coach with the Florida Gators. So on a weekend when they made big headlines by drafting Trevor Lawrence No. 1 overall, they had the potential to make more.
Anyone looking for drama in Duval County, however, is going to have to turn their attention to someone other than Tim Tebow.
Speaking to USA Today on Tuesday, Meyer had this to say about the possibility of signing Tebow:
"“It’s very simple: If we believe that Tim Tebow can help us win a game, then we’d look into it,” Meyer told USA TODAY Sports on Monday. “And we’re not there yet. If it happens, that’s our decision behind it.”"
So if they’re not there yet, that would lead most to believe that Tebow’s not ready to be an NFL tight end. And frankly, it’s for the best that the Jaguars aren’t signing him right now.
Tim Tebow would be a sideshow for the Jaguars as they try to build.
One of the big concerns whenever a successful college coach jumps to the NFL is that they won’t be able to fully comprehend and develop a successful professional culture. That exists wholly with Meyer in Jacksonville. So early in his tenure, he must do what he can to make sure he’s doing the right thing to earn respect of the locker room.
Signing Tebow would be a hindrance to that. It would be a sideshow, bringing in a 33-year-old former quarterback who’s been playing baseball for several years now to play tight end. It also just wouldn’t make sense for a young roster that is rebuilding and should be giving young players every possible opportunity to prove themselves.
Tim Tebow, tight end or quarterback or baseball player, doesn’t make sense for where the Jaguars are right now. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like a real possibility at this point. We’ll see if any more develops, however, as Meyer didn’t fully close the door as he poured cold water on the situation.
