Green Bay Packers: Has Aaron Rodgers been given the support he deserves?
By Lucas Schuh
Has Aaron Rodgers received the help he deserves with the Green Bay Packers?
To answer the question “Has Aaron Rodgers received the help he deserves” you have to figure out how much help the quarterback deserves and where on the roster he deserves it.
Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. He has a cannon arm, elite escapability and high-end creativity. But you could still argue that, throughout his career, the Packers have provided him with a good amount of help. Since he took over in 2008, his line has been quality and the franchise has consistently found adequate or above-average replacements when necessary.
Moreover, the wide receiver play has been good throughout Rodgers’ career. While you could argue that Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams have been the only outright stars, the likes of James Jones and Randall Cobb have been terrific complementary pass-catchers.
It’s been a bit of a different story, however, with the defense. Initially, the Green Bay defense was stout for Rodgers when he earned the starting job. But for many years thereafter, that side of the ball fell by the wayside. It wasn’t until Gutekunst took over and made the defense a distinct free agency focus that fact changed.
If you define Rodgers getting the help he deserves as offensive help, he’s received it. His wide receiver corps has long been strong and the offensive line has never been a concern. Contrarily, it does appear that the quarterback hasn’t always gotten the defensive help he deserves as he’s rarely had a unit on the opposite side of the ball he could rely on to provide assistance.
No matter what your definition is, though, Aaron Rodgers has received some sort of help at many different points. Yet, there have been many hurdles, namely rarely getting adequate help on both sides of the ball at the same time. That, in itself, might be the crux of any argument that he hasn’t gotten the help he deserves.
