Oh how quickly they forget. Adam Vinatieri became a shell of his former self during the latter portion of his career. The easy chip shots he would knock in from 50 yards became increasingly more difficult. But while his efficiency waned during the back half of his career, when Vinatieri was in the middle of his prime, he was money with the game on the line.
There’s a misconception currently taking place in the NFL world. Quarterback Tom Brady is given the rightful status as the greatest quarterback of all time but he’s unjustly been given all of the credit for the first trio of championships that were won in New England. Truth be told, Vinatieri deserves just as much if not more for that credit. On too many occasions to remember, Vinatieri saved Brady and the Patriots from having to compete in overtime.
Pay no attention to Vinatieri’s 83.8 field goal percentage during the course of his career and instead, focus on his golden years. He routinely soared above 90% including a career-high high of 96.8% in 2014.
The thinking behind bringing Vinatieri onboard is a simple one, even great teams have close games but with Vinatieri, we’ll be more likely to bring home the win.
