NFL: Creating the all-time roster with football’s legends: P, Dave Jennings

Career stats:

  • 41.2 punt yards

Accolades:

  • 4 time Pro Bowler
  • 2 time All-Pro

The job of a punter is never truly appreciated, after all, compared to every other position, their role isn’t exactly worthy of a SportsCenter top 10 highlight reel. To make matters worse, with the sort of firepower that’s on the offensive end with Tom Brady leading the charge, there’s reason to believe every time he gets the ball, he’ll be able to find the end zone. Also, add in a ridiculously good defense that will score on multiple occasions as well, and we have a punter whose job essentially becomes obsolete.

Regardless of that, offenses struggle at times, and defenses can’t always put points on the board. That’s where Dave Jennings comes in. While playing for both the New York Jets and New York Giants, Jennings was incredibly reliable. On average, he punted the ball 41.2 yards. Jennings consistently pinned opposing offenses deep in their own territory. With the sort of defenders that are already on this list, it would seem nearly impossible for anyone to make it all the way back down the field.

During his stellar career, Jennings was a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro selection. It may seem unlikely that the offense never scores but just in case that does happen, Jennings will be right there to push the opposing squad back.
