Punters Matter Too: Ranking the NFL’s 5 best at the position
By Lucas Schuh
1. Brett Kern, Tennessee Titans
Brett Kern is 35 years old but age hasn’t stopped in from consistently being one of the best punters in the NFL. Kern started his career with the Broncos signing as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo. Kern only played one year with Denver until he was cut and subsequently signed by the Tennesee Titans, where he still is to this day.
There were several older punters on the honorable mentions lis, but one thing that has separated Kern from his older contemporaries is consistency. He has had his ups and downs, as any player has, but Kern’s downs haven’t been nearly as bad as others. The veteran has always managed to bounce back from his bad years with some fantastic seasons.
In terms of placement and distance control, Kern may be the best in the NFL. He has constantly ranked in the top 10 in punts inside the 20. When you watch him play, he can place the ball almost anywhere he wants on the field. Kern wasn’t always the master of placement as he used to just have a big leg on him early in his career. But as he aged and his leg somewhat faded, he adjusted and locked in his accuracy.
For the time being, Brett Kern is the best punter in the NFL and, with the adjustments he’s made through his career, he will likely be a high-level punter for a little while longer. Could he fall off? Sure, but with his skill set, he won’t fall very far.
