Dallas Cowboys: Ranking new additions by order of importance
By Randy Gurzi
14. Nahshon Wright, CB
Another rookie here as we come to the Cowboys’ third pick in the third round, Nahshon Wright. The Oregon State cornerback is the player they ended up landing with the selection gained in the trade with the Philadelphia Eagles when they dropped down two spots to take Micah Parsons at No. 12.
Adding another top-100 pick is a good thing to do but the problem for Dallas is, they added a player who many didn’t think should have been in the top-100. The team even said as much after when Jerry Jones admitted they reached but justified it by saying they got Jabril Cox later than they should have, so it evened out.
Having said that, you don’t want to “even out” after landing a steal. And this pick forced them to think that way.
But enough about the value of the pick, this is about importance. And for Dallas, it was incredibly important to add help in the secondary and they did that in Round 2. Once they were in Round 3, it would have made sense to add some safety help but if they were going to get more corners, they should have added one who would have been a vast improvement over the players they have.
As of now, Wright isn’t better than Jourdan Lewis, Anthony Brown, Trevon Diggs, or Joseph. There’s even doubt whether or not he’s going to be better in 2021 than their sixth-round pick, Israel Mukuamu. The good news is, he has a lot of traits that cannot be taught, but for 2021 he might seem like an afterthought in this defense.
