The Packers have an excellent safety tandem in Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos. In fact, Amos was arguably the team’s best player on defense last season, sans cornerback Jaire Alexander. Green Bay has excellent starters at safety, but who inspires confidence behind them?

During minicamp this past week, Will Redmond was taking the majority of snaps as the fifth defensive back in the defense’s nickel package. While Redmond is one of the team’s most valuable special teamers, he’s been a liability on defense during his time with the Packers. His coverage ability is shaky, especially when tasked with covering bigger tight ends.

Malik Hooker is an excellent low-risk, high-reward option as a free agent signing. The Packers need another safety to rotate with Amos and Savage, especially if Amos is going to be playing in the box. Hooker is a good player in coverage, something that a true free safety needs to excel at.

Drafted in the first round in 2017, Hooker just couldn’t seem to stay healthy during his first four seasons in the NFL with the Colts. He appeared in just two games last season and has missed 29 games in his four years. Because of that, his price tag will likely be extremely low, as teams will be wary of signing a long-term deal with an injury-prone player. If he can stay healthy, Hooker would undoubtedly outperform his price tag.
