The Dallas Cowboys improved their roster this offseason but could still look to get better by adding one of these three free agents before training camp

After going 6-10 in his first season as the Dallas Cowboys head coach, Mike McCarthy is hoping to get his team on track this coming season.

One thing that should help will be the return to health of quarterback Dak Prescott. After losing Prescott to a broken ankle in Week 5, Dallas completely fell apart. But if we are being honest, they had plenty of concerns before that — especially on defense.

That’s why they went out of their way to rebuild that unit this offseason. Dallas added players in both free agency and the 2021 NFL Draft to that side of the ball in hopes that they could improve and compete in the NFC East once again.

But with training camp coming up, they would be smart to look for even more talent late in the free agency period. Here are four players they could add in hopes of filling out their roster with the best possible talent.

4. Nick Mullens, Quarterback

With Dak Prescott breaking his ankle last season, the Cowboys had to turn to Andy Dalton for much of the season. Dalton suffered a concussion and had COVID which led to a stretch of Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert playing as well, but for much of the season, Dalton was the guy.

This year, the Red Rifle will be in Chicago which means Dallas has just Gilbert, DiNucci, and Cooper Rush behind Dak. Gilbert showed promise but it might be a stretch to go into the season without a more experienced veteran.

Dallas has kicked the tires on some players including Brett Hundley and Jeff Driskel (who ultimately signed with Houston) but they could still look at another veteran such as Nick Mullens.

The 26-year-old Mullens spent his entire carer up to this point with the San Francisco 49ers and has 16 career starts. His record is just 5-11 but he has completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 4,714 yards with 25 touchdowns and 22 picks. He’s not an elite player but could be a decent game manager should the Cowboys need to turn to a backup again at any point in 2021.
