Denver Broncos: Signing Ronald Darby for so much
Ronald Darby was very good in 2020 for the Washington Football Team, which was a change from his 2019 season with the Philadelphia Eagles. That year, Darby struggled mightily as did the rest of the Eagles secondary.
He was playing on his second-straight one-year contract as the former Buffalo Bills second-round selection was looking to prove he deserved a little more security. The Denver Broncos decided that they were comfortable giving him that, agreeing to a three-year, $30 million contract with the Florida State product.
Darby now joins a defense that has completely made over their secondary. They return their starting safeties in Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson but will now have three new cornerbacks in Darby, Kyle Fuller, and rookie Patrick Surtain. Of the three, it’s easy to make the argument that Darby could be the third-best option which makes his contract seem a little pricey.
When he’s at his best, Darby is a capable starter but his inconsistent play gives reason to be concerned. It might have been better to try and land him on a one-year deal the same way Washington did. And if that meant they would have lost out on signing him, they probably could have done just as well with another option for less money.
