Houston Texans: Not trading Deshaun Watson early in the offseason
When a franchise player wants out, it’s hard for a team to pull the trigger. That was the case for the Houston Texans when Deshaun Watson started to express his disdain for the franchise.
His frustration was understandable because they were simply run into the ground by Bill O’Brien. Despite O’Brien seemingly losing control of his team, the front office continued to give him more and more control.
Eventually, he was the only decision-maker and that led to him trading away one of the best wide receivers in the game, DeAndre Hopkins, for a second-round pick and an overpaid running back who has been struggling mightily in David Johnson. Later, it was revealed that B.O.B. even compared Hopkins to Aaron Hernandez which was clearly out of line.
Of course, Watson could be criticized for signing his extension after O’Brien started to make these wild moves but still, his desire to be traded made sense. Houston balked, but then a whole lot of reports surfaced accusing Watson of some terrible actions away from the field.
Nothing has been proven as of yet but the allegations have made his market non-existent. Now, Houston has a whole lot of quarterbacks in Tyrod Taylor, Jeff Driskel, and Davis Mills. They’re expecting Taylor to start and Mills could be the future of the team but as of now, they still have Watson and might not get the proper value in return.
It’s hard to fault them too much for waiting but unfortunately for them, it cost them this time.
