Jacksonville Jaguars: The Shaquill Griffin contract

Year after year, the Jacksonville Jaguars cough up big money for free agents, and year after year, they struggle. Yet they continue to try and hit a home run in the open market which they went for in 2021 with the signing of Shaquill Griffin.

The former Seattle Seahawks cornerback agreed to a three-year, $40 million contract with $29 million of that being guaranteed. But not everyone is sold on him being a star.

Chris Roling of Bleacher report even named him a potential free agency dud, pointing to his low grades with PFF and the fact that he’s surrendered a lot of touchdowns.

"“Whether Griffin can meet those is hard to say. He only graded at a 64.1 at PFF last year for good reason; he allowed a 62.1 completion percentage with six touchdowns on 87 targets last year. In fact, he’s allowed 15 touchdowns over his last three seasons. There’s still elite potential with Griffin, but the production hasn’t always been there. He’s joining an arguably worse defense though, with the possible inability to meet live up to the hype leading to disappointment.” — Roling, Bleacher Report"

Seattle had a terrible secondary in 2020 so breaking the bank for one of their corners doesn’t seem like the best strategy. And it’s one that could end up hurting the Jags.
