Minnesota Vikings: Signing Nick Vigil over Eric Wilson

It seems like the only moves the Minnesota Vikings made this offseason was to sign every cornerback they could. They added Patrick Peterson, Bashaud Breeland, and brought back Mackensie Alexander.

But they did make other moves as well, but the mistake they made was to let Eric Wilson leave and replace him with Nick Vigil. Chris Schad from The Viking Age agreed, saying he thinks they could have found a way to make retaining Wilson work.

"“Minnesota struck early in free agency to replace Wilson with Nick Vigil. Entering his age-28 season, Vigil has been in a reserve role during his five NFL seasons, but he posted a similar performance to Wilson in 2019 (111 tackles, one sack, one interception, one forced fumble). Saving the extra $1.75 million could have been the difference for signing Patrick Peterson, Xavier Woods, or any of the Vikings’ defensive upgrades this year. But it seems like a small price to pay for the younger Wilson.” — Chris Schad, The Viking Age"

Minnesota apparently decided that it was much more important to improve their secondary and the defensive line. In addition to the corners they added, they also signed defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and safety Xavier Woods.

They were right to prioritize those positions but they also could have found a way to make up the savings elsewhere to keep Wilson.
