Cleveland Browns: Passing on Rashod Bateman, risking hopes on their current wide receivers

If nothing else, Cleveland Browns fans are fiercely loyal. This team has been so desperate for a winner that they’ve started to overvalue some of their players who have helped them turn things around — with Jarvis Landry standing out as the player they put far too much stock in.

Landry is a decent wide receiver but he’s similar to a volume shooter in the NBA. He beats zone coverage and racks up a ton of catches doing so but the yards and touchdowns don’t follow. A perfect example of this came in 2017 when he was with Miami and he led the NFL with 112 receptions but finished with just 987 yards.

Despite that 8.8 yards per receptions average, former GM John Dorsey gave him a five-year $75.5 million contract after trading for him. Landry has been a good receiver and did absolutely help turn things around but in the playoffs against Kansas City his limitations were on full display as he couldn’t beat the Chiefs man coverage even though they’re not exactly a shut-down defense.

Even with those issues, the Browns elected to skip on Rashod Bateman in the draft and instead took Greg Newsome. While Newsome should be a good player, he also has an extensive injury history as do their other starting-caliber cornerbacks.

As fate would have it, Bateman ended up joining the Baltimore Ravens so they will see up close and personal what they missed out on as they lean primarily on third-round pick Anthony Schwartz and Odell Beckham, Jr. coming off a torn ACL as the ones to stretch the field.
