NFL History: 30 players fans loved to loathe: 14. Cam Newton

Whether it’s the eccentric pre and post-game outfits that he tries to pass off as fashionable, or the way he acted so petulantly following his Super Bowl defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos in 2015, whatever the case is, Cam Newton isn’t a very liked person in the eyes of fans.

From the moment Newton stepped onto an NFL field in 2011 he knew he was good, opposing players knew he was good and fans certainly knew he was good. Newton routinely torched defenders on a nightly basis. Just when fans believed they had him contained in the pocket, Newton would peel off down the sidelines for an outrageous run.

The hate for Newton has always been there, but things magnified in 2015. On the year, Newton led the Carolina Panthers to a 15-1 record. All season long Newton rubbed everyone the wrong way. Fans hated seeing him truck over a defender into the end zone then look into the camera, pretend he was ripping open his jersey to reveal a huge S that stood for Superman, then yell. Newton was cocky simply because he knew no one could stop him. But his actions didn’t lead him to winning any new fans. And the moment he fell from his lofty spot atop the league, the hecklers couldn’t stop laughing.
