NFL History: 30 players fans loved to loathe: 7. Michael Irvin

As mentioned in the post with Ezekiel Elliot, great players who played for the Dallas Cowboys were always met with a higher level of vitriol when compared to other players. When it comes to Michael Irvin, nothing changed.

Irvin talked trash on the field and had no problem backing it up. Once he hit his prime at the age of 25, he was arguably the best receiver in the league, or at least amongst a small handful. Irvin played a huge part on a Cowboys team that won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993. Things didn’t go the way he was expecting in 1993, but the Cowboys were back on top of the NFL world in 1994 after winning another title.

Irvin was hated around the league. The reason being is that he had a knack for making defenders look bad when they were matched up against him. Still, no matter how badly a fan base hates a certain player, they put their difference aside when said player gets seriously injured. But, when it came to Irvin, fans, and in this case Philadelphia Eagles fans, still antagonized him as he laid motionless on the turf due to a spinal injury. Fair or foul, for as much as Irvin tormented them, this was payback for Eagles fans.
