NFL History: 30 players fans loved to loathe: 5. Tony Romo

If you weren’t paying attention, you would never know that Tony Romo was ever hated. As an outstanding color commenter, Romo has really found his nitch in his new career. But before he was breaking down game tape with ridiculous accuracy, Romo was the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.

As mentioned on numerous occasions already, those who wear Cowboys uniforms aren’t loved outside of Dallas. But when it came to Romo, even his own die-hard fans began turning against him. For as great as Romo was, and he was undoubtedly great, he never brought his team to the promised land. In addition to that, there are several plays that will stick out to Cowboys fans forever.

In a 2007 playoff game, the Cowboys had an opportunity to grab a two-point lead with just over a minute remaining on the clock against the Seattle Seahawks. As the kicker lined up to hand them the lead, Romo botched the snap. From there, a memorably awful play ensued. A slow-footed Romo attempted to make a run for the end zone. That, of course, didn’t work as he caught from behind. It was laughable plays such as that one that made Romo a hated figure at times in the Dallas community.
