The Packers’ secondary has a chance to be one of the NFL’s elite groups in 2021. Led by Jaire Alexander, who’s proven to be a true shutdown cornerback, had a breakout season in 2020 and was named an All-Pro at the conclusion of the season. Could safety Darnell Savage follow in his footsteps?

Savage, a first round selection in the 2019 draft, has shown flashes of greatness during his first two seasons. What’s lacking is the consistency on a snap-by-snap basis. What’s intriguing about Savage, however, is his ability to play anywhere in the secondary. Touted as a true free safety, he has the skill-set to play cornerback, in the box as an extra defender or in the slot. His versatility makes him invaluable.

During the 2020 season, Savage allowed a catch rate of just 54 percent for 356 yards and a touchdown, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required). He finished with four interceptions, seven pass breakups, and allowed a passer rating of just 63.0 when targeted in his coverage area.

Now entering his third season in the NFL, expect Savage to take a big step forward in his development this coming season. Like Rashan Gary, a fellow first round pick in 2019, Savage has a chance to help take the Packers defense from good to great.
