Minnesota Vikings defensive front looks imposing once again
A team that reached the playoffs in 2019 fell hard this past season. Now a rejuvenated Minnesota Vikings defensive line looks to have a big year.
It was almost an unimaginable year for a Mike Zimmer defensive unit. Off a 10-6 finish and a playoff win at New Orleans, the Minnesota Vikings had high expectations for 2020. But the team was pounded in Week 1 at home by the Packers and wound up losing five of their first six games. By season’s end, the Purple Gang was a disappointing 7-9 and finished third in the NFC North.
But what was shocking was the collapse of the once-proud Minnesota defense. In 2019, Zimmer’s club finished a respectable 14th in the league in total yards allowed per game. The Vikings and Steelers both allowed a mere 303 points – just 18.9 points per game. But what a reversal of misfortunes for this side of the ball this past year? The team gave up an astounding
The Vikings allowed a whopping 475 points and 49 offensive touchdowns. A pass rush that was missing stud edge performer Danielle Hunter for the whole season was limited to 23 sacks. Minnesota allowed 30 scores through the air. Zimmer’s club finished 27th in the NFL in both total defense and run defense.
This offseason, general manager Rick Spielman addressed the offensive line twice in the first three rounds. That includes Virginia Tech tackle Christian Darrisaw with the 23rd overall pick. But keep an eye on the defensive front, one that welcomes back a few players and adds a solid veteran.
The Vikings signed former Giants’ defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson to pair inside with Michael Pierce. Hunter is healthy and ready to go. End Stephen Weatherly returns to the Twin Cities after a season in Carolina. And massive Sheldon Richardson was recently signed as well.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com explains that the eight-year pro actually turned down more money to return to the Browns and instead opted to join the Vikings for the second time in four years. With the Purple Gang in 2018, the talented performer started all 16 games and finished with 49 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
There’s a lot to be excited about here when it comes to that Vikings’ defensive line. A big year from a solid and deeper group could add to big things for a team that has plenty of offensive firepower these days.
