With the NFL approving the use of alternative helmets in the 2022 season, teams are set to bring back their old uniforms. But what teams have the best?
The NFL announced last week that teams intending to bring back alternative and classic uniforms can officially use alternative helmets starting in 2022, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Twitter.
Prior to the league’s announcement, teams were limited only to the use of their standard helmets designated for home, away, and color rush uniforms, limiting many teams -and fan bases alike – from seeing their favorite “old school” jerseys and helmets on the field and on television.
Now that the reigns are off, the possibilities are wide open for many of your favorite teams to bring back the classics – from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers “creamsicle” jerseys to the baby blue and red of the old Houston Oilers.
Let’s take a look at the top five classic and alternate uniforms that could come back in the 2022 NFL season — but first, some honorable mentions:
- Tennesee Titans – Houston Oilers
- Cleveland Browns – Orange helmets/jerseys
- Denver Broncos – “Bucking D” helmets
Now, onto the top five.
NFL Uniform No. 5: Buffalo Bills – Red helmet, Navy jersey
Starting off this list with a rather controversial opinion — especially to those in Orchard Park — The Buffalo Bills had some great helmets and jerseys back in the early and mid-2000s.
The red helmets were a staple of the Bills back in the 1990s and their four consecutive Super Bowl runs, the navy jerseys with the grayish-blue pants were unique to the time, and remain so to this day.
Many Buffalo greats wore the red and navy, from Willis McGahee and Marshawn Lynch to Mario Williams. Despite that, the Bills didn’t have their fondest seasons while rocking these uniforms, leading to many fans remembering them not as fondly as some may wish
That all said, with the Buffalo Bills having turned the corner — as seen in their 2020 AFC Championship appearance — it’s past time the Bills bring back these unique and classic threads, this time with a better reception from the Buffalo faithful.
