If NFL Franchises were EURO 2020 Teams: Part 4
By Tadhg Flynn
1. England – NFL Franchise Comparison: Dallas Cowboys
Next game: vs. Germany, Tuesday, June 29
There is no team in world soccer quite like England. Without question, England is the most universally disliked team by fans of soccer around the world. As the birthplace of the modern sport of football, English fans have an arrogance that no other fans do. They feel an inherent superiority and ownership of the sport.
Right now, their team’s talent certainly matches that arrogance. They have tonnes of offensive talent, including players like Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling. They are very well-coached and hold an impressive defensive shape.
Alas, England at major tournaments have a long history of messing up their chances with terrible performances and mental blocks. In their long history, they have only won 1 tournament, the 1966 World Cup.
Every time they look like they might do well, the English fans and the sports media build up expectations and it all comes tumbling down. Every other nation loves to unite against them because of this history. There’s always a story with England.
Of all teams analyzed for this four-part series, England are the easiest team to compare to the NFL. The team history feels almost identical to the Dallas Cowboys. Their fans are cocky and very loud about their opinion. Their team rarely matches their talent to the level of expectations.
The Cowboys have not won anything for quite some time, and their recent opportunities to do well have blown up thanks to a combination of overconfidence and bad luck. They are every other fans’ favorite team to hate. If you tune into EURO 2020 looking for entertainment and drama, England are guaranteed to provide it.
