Dallas Cowboys should consider bringing David DeCastro in
The Dallas Cowboys should have their offensive line back in 2021 but they should still consider signing veteran guard David DeCastro.
Releasing David DeCastro was likely not a move the Pittsburgh Steelers wanted to make. However, considering that the former NFL All-Pro and veteran offensive guard is dealing with injuries that limited him in 2020 and have led to him considering his football future, it was a move the Steelers had to make. And it could also open up the door for a team like the Dallas Cowboys.
Starting with the obvious, the Cowboys (or any NFL team) shouldn’t be after DeCastro if he’s about to hang up his cleats. That just doesn’t make any sense. However, if there’s any chance that he’s going to be on the field in some capacity for the 2021 season, then a team like Dallas should make a move for him.
Now, it’s a viable question to ask why the Cowboys would need DeCastro. With Tyron Smith and La’el Collins now healthy and returning to the lineup, Zack Martin and Connor Williams can man the two guard spots. So where would DeCastro fit in? Well, if last season should’ve taught the franchise anything, it’s that offensive line depth can never be addressed too much.
David DeCastro would be the ultimate insurance policy for the Dallas Cowboys.
In the simplest terms, if the Cowboys saw either Martin or Williams go down, there is not a proven option that Dallas could turn to at guard. Furthermore, Williams, though he’s been impressive so far this offseason, has not played particularly well thus far in his NFL career.
Either having DeCastro as veteran depth to rotate in or as injury insurance or even starting him over Williams would be a huge boom for Dallas. For all the improvements this team has made, they are going to have to be a top-tier offense in 2021 if they want to meet win expectations. That’s not going to happen if the integrity of the offensive line gets compromised.
Again, it makes complete sense if DeCastro is truly uncertain about playing again if the Cowboys and other teams stay away. If he can come back healthily, though, he’s someone that Dallas should take a long look at to try and upgrade the strength of their offensive line group as a whole.
