Green Bay Packers should give Davante Adams whatever he wants
Davante Adams and the Green Bay Packers are reportedly working towards a huge new contract and the wide receiver deserves all the money he gets.
Over the past week or so, it seems that the focus around the Green Bay Packers has shifted from the Aaron Rodgers saga to the future of Davante Adams. The All-Pro wide receiver could become a free agent after the 2021 NFL season and, though he has expressed a desire to remain in place, he’s also talked about playing with Derek Carr on the Raiders.
But on Thursday, the signs again pointed to Adams staying with the Packers beyond the 2021 season. Appearing on SportsCenter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said that Green Bay and their star wide receiver were working towards a “massive” new contract that would reportedly make Adams the highest-paid player in the NFL at his position.
Any contract that Davante Adams was going to sign for a deal beyond this upcoming season was always going to be enormous, whether it was with the Packers or one of the other 31 teams. Having said that, Green Bay is clearly looking to take care of arguably the best pass-catcher in the NFL.
Paying any player that amount of money is a risky proposition, no matter how good they’ve been. However, if anyone has earned their keep, Adams certainly has made his case to be able to name his price.
Davante Adams has earned every bit of a massive contract that he gets with the Green Bay Packers.
Though he’s not a physical marvel, Adams has established his dominance as an NFL pass-catcher over the past few years, most notably notching 111 receptions for 1,386 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2018 and then posting 115 catches for 1,374 yards and 18 scores while missing two games in the 2020 season.
It seems as if Davante Adams has only gotten more dominant as his career has gone on. And as a player who will be just 29 years old after this season, it’s not hard to see how he’s earned his big payday with this type of production. Throw in the fact that he’s been a good soldier who has gone to work and done his job at the highest level and that point is only furthered.
Now, the Rodgers saga throws a slight wrench into the situation. But Adams also proved he can produce in that situation. Playing seven games without the star quarterback in 2017 — even before the wideout elevated his game to the next level — he caught 41 passes for 489 yards and four touchdowns. For such a substantial drop in quarterback play, that’s impressive.
All told, Adams has passed every test to earn a monster contract. Now that the taxman is coming to collect on a new contract, Green Bay has no choice really but to give the wide receiver what he wants. If they don’t, another team will — because that’s what he’s proven to be worth.
