Chicago Bears Defensive Line

On paper, this Chicago Bears defensive line unit looks to be among the best in the NFL. Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman and Bilal Nichols are each very good players as a group. There is a problem, however. There are reports that Goldman may retire before the start of training camp.

If Goldman does indeed retire, it puts the Bears in a dilemma. Goldman does a great job of taking up the opposing offensive line’s attention. That allows Hicks and Nichols more space to operate. Additionally, he gives the linebackers a chance to roam and make plays in areas they normally wouldn’t be around.

The Bears’ rush defense is much better with Goldman on the field. With him and Hicks together, Chicago’s defense allows more than 40 yards less than when they aren’t together. Also, Goldman does a good job of pressuring the quarterback.

The Bears have rookies LaCale London and Khyiris Tonga in the rotation. However, London is an undrafted rookie and Tonga is a seventh-round pick so it may take some time for them to get accustomed to the NFL speed. There is also Mario Edwards, who does a good job in a backup role.

This defensive line is already pretty thin with Goldman. If he retires, there are slim pickings in the free-agent market. Nichols could replace him like he did last season, but he isn’t as effective as Goldman is. With Goldman on the line, this is a formidable starting line. Without him things get murky. If any of the starters go down for an extended period of time, it’ll be tough for the replacements up front to keep the continuity going.

Let’s hope all three starters are in there for the long haul.
