Pre-training camp 2021 NFL Power Rankings: Packers slide, Titans climbing
By Randy Gurzi
The trend is broken as we finally get to a team that doesn’t have a new coach with the Las Vegas Raiders coming in at No. 29. The Raiders are entering their second reason in Las Vegas and fourth with Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock running the show together.
Gruden, who coached the team from 1998 through 2001 returned in 2018 and took over a team that was 6-10 in 2017 under Jack Del Rio but had just gone 12-4 the year prior. That was their first winning season since 2002 — which was when Bill Callahan took them to the Super Bowl where they lost to Jon Gruden who was coaching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Their hope was that Gruden could get them back to their winning ways but so far, he has led them to a 4-12 season, a 7-9 season, and an 8-8 campaign in 2020. Then, they decided to tear apart their strength, which was the offensive line.
Vegas also reached a bit on their first pick and while Trevon Moehrig in the second was a steal, they drafted three safeties and re-signed Karl Joseph. Right now, it feels as though the Raiders don’t have a great plan and that could lead to a very rough season for them.
