Free Agent Cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested and charged with burglary and domestic violence.
Police officials in King County, Washington arrested current NFL free agent and former Seahawks and 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman Wednesday morning on a charge of domestic violence/burglary. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Sherman was denied bail.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Sherman showed up at the home of a family member and attempted to get inside forcefully. The police were called and the NFL veteran was reportedly uncooperative as he was being detained.
TMZ reports that charges of this matter in the State of Washington register as a felony. If convicted, Sherman would be facing time behind bars. Sherman is currently being held at the King County Correctional Facility. Schefter also noted, importantly, that the cornerback has not yet been formally charged. That cannot happen until he appears in front of a district court, which won’t happen until Thursday.
Additionally, state police are also investigating Sherman with a possible connection to a hit and run incident that took place earlier in the morning. Per multiple reports, a spokesman for the Redmond Police Department says that they received a 911 call from a residential area, citing a suspect attempting to force entry. The suspect was eventually apprehended and taken to a local hospital before being booked.
Additionally, police received a call regarding a single-car accident, with the car being registered to Sherman. The vehicle was eventually found at the spot of the 911 call, and Sherman was identified on the scene.
The NFLPA has released a statement regarding the situation.
The five-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro cornerback spent the last three seasons with San Francisco, helping lead them to a Super Bowl berth in 2020. Last season, Sherman recorded 18 tackles and one interception after playing only five games.
Before he arrived in San Francisco, Sherman was a fifth-round draft pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2011, helping lead them to their first-ever Super Bowl title in 2013 and back to the big game once again the following year. Sherman was among Seattle’s historic secondary known as the Legion of Boom.
