Green Bay Packers roster cut candidate No. 3: Devin Funchess, WR

Amid widespread calls for the franchise to upgrade the wide receiver position leading up to the 2020 campaign, the one move that the team made at the position was to sign veteran Devin Funchess. Uninspiring in nature from the start, it was made even more so when the Packers didn’t even get to see the wideout on the field last season as Funchess was among the players who chose to opt-out of the year due to concerns around COVID-19.

No one is holding the decision to opt-out against Funchess but the truth of the matter is that it might hurt his potential to make the roster in the 2021 season. For starters, guys like Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling delivered imperfect but promising performances last season with opportunities there for the taking. Moreover, the team likely still has hope for young Equanimeous St. Brown and want to see him healthy.

In addition to the guys already on the roster seemingly having a leg up on Funchess heading into training camp, the Packers also used their 2021 third-round pick on wide receiver Amari Rodgers out of Clemson, a player who seems primed to see a hefty amount of early snaps in his career. That creates a crowded wide receiver room and, unless Funchess wows in camp and in the preseason, he might stay behind the 8-ball.
