3 Position battles to watch in Dallas Cowboys training camp

As is always the case, training camp will offer up plenty of intrigue in the form of position battles. There aren’t a lot of open positions on offense up for grabs but there’s a special teams battle and several defensive ones to watch.

3. Bryan Anger vs. Hunter Niswander

After moving on from Chris Jones, the Dallas Cowboys have a punter competition on their hands. Hunter Niswander was there for eight games after Jones was injured and he was impressive with 47.2 yards per punt.

He won’t have an easy time making the team since Bryan Anger is his challenger and he has nine years of experience with Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, and Houston. Anger averages 46.2 yards per kick for his career and could make Dallas feel more comfortable than the youngster.

2. Defensive tackle roulette

After moving on from Tyrone Crawford — who ended up retiring — the Cowboys now have several defensive tackles vying for the two starting jobs. There’s second-year player Neville Gallimore, third-year player Trsyten Hill, veteran Brent Urban, and rookie third-round Osa Odighizuwa.

Each player has their own positive traits but no one is guaranteed a spot. They will all have to battle hard to prove they belong and players such as Hill could even be fighting for their spot on the roster.

1. Kelvin Joseph vs. Nahshon Wright

This might be a surprise but there could be a battle between Kelvin Joseph and Nahshon Wright for the top rookie cornerback on the team. Joseph was taken in the second round and has a lot of talent but really didn’t get a lot of playing time in the NCAA.

Wright comes in as an incredible raw talent but he has great length at 6-foot-4 and 183-pounds. He was taken at No. 99 overall, which was the pick they got from Philadelphia in their first-round trade, and it was immediately called a reach. But the early returns have been impressive as Wright played well in minicamps.
