Once again, the Dallas Cowboys went into a draft with their eyes on one position, and once again, it burnt them in a terrible way — but this one might have been the worst. In 2017, the Cowboys were in need of a pass rusher and decided to use their first-round pick on Taco Charlton.

What made this one even worse than the fact that they left an All-Pro on the board for the worst reasoning ever. At No. 28 overall, the Cowboys could have taken Charlton or T.J. Watt and decided that Charlton was a better fit in their scheme since he was 6-foot-6 and 270-pounds.

They believed the 6-foot-4, 252-pound Watt couldn’t play with his hand in the dirt. That allowed him to go to Pittsburgh where he’s amassed 49.5 sacks in four seasons including an NFL leading 15 in 2020.

As for Charlton, he had four sacks in two seasons with Dallas before being cut — and it wasn’t just his play but there were reports that he had a problem with his attitude as well. He’s currently on the Kansas City Chiefs but has just 11 career sacks and has in no way lived up to his status as a day one pick. But the good news is, Cowboys fans can always watch Watt and dream of what could have been if only they weren’t beholden to measurement.
