New York Jets finally start new era by getting Zach Wilson signed
After waiting and delaying the inevitable, the New York Jets have finally signed rookie quarterback Zach Wilson.
One question should be directed to the New York Jets by the press after finally signing No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson: What took you so long?
The rookie from BYU is now under contract for four years after signing a $35.1 million deal that includes a signing bonus of approximately $22.9 million, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Wilson is also the last first-round pick to sign his rookie deal.
Seriously, what took so long? The New York Jets have consistently spoken about building a new culture under head coach Robert Saleh and that things are going to change. And right after that, they essentially take the ordeal into training camp to finally get their potential franchise quarterback under contract.
Thankfully, they can put that aside as Wilson can come in and start taking reps while progressing to what the Jets hope him to be, the next great quarterback, the kind that Gang Green has not seen since Joe Namath and his fur coat skipped town.
Zach Wilson has signed his deal with the New York Jets and the future now begins in green.
Last season at BYU, Zach Wilson was phenomenal and directed an offense that was considered one of the more exciting units in college football. Meanwhile, the New York Jets offense was less than that, or for lack of better words, downright dismal. Thus, they moved on from Sam Darnold and brought Wilson in to restart and rebuild.
However, despite the disappointments of last season, rookie offensive tackle Mekhi Becton showed tremendous promise. The Jets made several moves this offseason to plug up the holes and drafted quite well to ensure their quarterback would succeed. Additionally, wide receiver Denzel Mims returns, and the addition of Corey Davis only provides a blessing.
It took a lot longer than expected, but Zach Wilson is officially under contract in New York. One item is off the checklist; now, the next task is to get him on the field and play and restore credibility to the franchise.
