Tim Tebow’s conversion to tight end looked like a sideshow for Jacksonville but, after some training camp flashes, could he actually make the 53-man roster?
When Tim Tebow was at the absolute peak of his fame and previously in the NFL as a quarterback, there were many who proposed the notion that he was a better football player than he was a signal-caller. So after a stint in the New York Mets organization, it would seem as if the former Heisman Trophy winner is putting that to the test as he is in Jacksonville Jaguars training camp as a tight end.
The news of new Jags head coach Urban Meyer signing Tebow in any capacity wasn’t all that shocking. Many looked at it as a sideshow of sorts and just a former college coach looking out for one of his most iconic former players. However, there might be some smoke to him making the roster, which also means there might be fire.
Recently, Walter Football’s Charlie Campbell reported that Tim Tebow had “a legit shot” to make the Jaguars final 53-man roster. Then, video surfaced of rookie No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence hitting Tebow in the end zone with a strike for a touchdown at training camp:
So as we see and hear all of this, a simple question becoming worth asking: Can Tim Tebow actually make the Jaguars’ 53-man roster as a tight end.
The safe bet would be Tim Tebow gets cut but you can’t rule anything out.
If I were forced to make a bet about Tebow’s roster spot, it would be that he’s going to end up on the wrong side of the final cut line. However, that would be something that’s only worth betting if you are forced to because it’s starting to seem like there is a plausible chance he does make the team.
One thing Tim Tebow can never be discredited for is his motivation and work ethic. It was famous at Florida and at his other NFL stops and likely has continued through baseball and to now. He showed up to every camp thos offseason jacked and in great shape, clearly putting in the work to try and make this work.
Furthermore, the Jaguars are actually quite thin at tight end at this point as only James O’Shaughnessy has any type of experience at the pro level (and even that is modest). Thus, if Tebow shows legitimate flashes, what’s to stop Jacksonville from taking a big swing on his upside.
All told, it still feels overall unlikely for Tebow to make the final cut. Having said that, a more apparent path is taking shape for him to be part of the 53-man roster, which is something I wouldn’t have said when the Jaguars first signed him.
