2. Kelvin Joseph, Cornerback
Last year, the Cowboys secondary was a complete mess. This season, they hope to be better even though they lost Chidobe Awuzie in free agency.
With him out, Dallas will be turning to second-year cornerback Trevon Diggs as the No. 1 guy. That’s a tall ask but Diggs is more than confident and there’s optimism he can make a leap.
The question is, who starts next to him?
Veterans Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis both want to be in the mix as does the aforementioned Maurice Canady. But they have some competition in rookie Kelvin Joseph from Kentucky. During his first training camp, Joseph has already caught the attention of the team’s vice president of player personnel Stephen Jones who says he has “jumped out.”
"“Yeah, (Joseph) is kicking butt,” Jones said via Jonny Auping of DallasCowboys.com. “He is doing some really good things. He’s really going to be a big help for us this year, on a timeline he’s going to really help us out. He’s jumped out.”"
Joseph is a player with more than enough talent to become a star in the NFL but he’s lacking in the experience department. That’s why the team has been so excited to see Joseph already showing that he belongs among the best in the NFL.
Even if he doesn’t win the starting job, simply knowing he can hold his own should help defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and the coaching staff feel better about their defense in 2021.
