Dallas Cowboys: 3 Standout performers from Hall of Fame Game
By Randy Gurzi
1. Garrett Gilbert, Quarterback
There’s no quarterback controversy in Dallas since Dak Prescott has the job locked up. However, there’s some question about the No. 2 spot.
Garrett Gilbert is the favorite for the job but the Cowboys did look around this offseason. On Thursday, he showed them that they should feel confident going into the season with him as the primary reserve behind Dak.
On the opening drive, he showed his composure as he completed a third-and-four conversion to Noah Brown and a third-and-seven to Rico Dowdle on the first drive. He then started the second drive with a bullet pass to Cedrick Wilson before hitting the wideout again a couple of plays later on a third-and-four.
Again, Gilbert showed his poise not only on that pass but also on the one prior when he saved a bad snap and got a pass off to Dowdle for a short gain just before the big conversion. If that wasn’t enough, he then hit a perfect pass to Sean McKeon on third-and-12, which McKeon turned into another first down as he gained 13 yards after avoiding one tackle attempt.
Not everything was perfect for Gilbert as he nearly had a pick on his first drive, trying to force the ball to Malik Turner on third-and-goal which led to the Cowboys having to settle for a field goal. He also had the ball stripped from him before having to settle for another field goal try on the second drive — although this one was no good.
Gilbert finished his night 9-of-13 passing for 104 yards and did a good enough job to stay ahead of the competition.
