Though he’s now the head coach of the Jets (a team that would’ve been the sixth landing spot for C.J. Henderson had we extended the list to that point), Robert Saleh made a strong showing from the 49ers secondary seem commonplace, despite the fact that San Francisco’s group at the position was comprised of aging veterans and, to some degree, castoffs along with young guys.

Having said that, the Niners cornerback room has undergone substantial changes entering the 2021 season. The most proven commodity is Jason Verrett but, unfortunately, what he’s not proven is that he can stay healthy, despite his talent. Meanwhile, there are a lot of fine yet unspectacular young vets like K’Waun Williams and Dontae Johnson, among others.

Outside of rookie Ambry Thomas, though, the one thing that stands out about this group in the Bay Area is the lack of long-term upside. This is a group that can be coached to compete now but what happens just a year or two down the road leaves a little bit to be desired.

Subsequently, C.J. Henderson could be a game-changer for the future of the 49ers defense. This franchise has a lot of money committed to a lot of places, so being able to secure a player with the talent of the 2020 first-rounder while he’s still on a rookie contract is something that the Niners would be foolish to ignore.
