NFL Power Rankings, Preseason Week 1: Rookie QBs steal the show
By Randy Gurzi
The Jared Goff era nearly got off to a horrific start for the Detroit Lions. His very first pass attempt in blue and silver went directly to a Bills defender but the interception wasn’t completed. He settled down from there and had just one more pass hit the turf, finishing 7-of-9 for 56 yards.
There wasn’t much to get excited about but also not a lot to bash him on. It was just okay. Their best play under center, however, came from David Blough who was 5-of-6 for 76-yards and proved he can be a reserve in this league.
Looking forward to 2021, the issue for the Lions will be how their wideouts play. They know their quarterback play is going to likely be average but the wideouts will be what pushes that play higher or lower. None of the starters did a whole lot in this won, with Tyrell Williams being the best of that group with 30 yards on two catches.
Another receiver who had just two receptions was rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown. And while he had just 12 yards, he was being praised for his “crisp” route-running.
Detroit is going to be a work in progress this season and finding players such as St. Brown who can step up and become contributors will be huge for them as they look to make sure they’re a better team in 2022 and going forward.
