NFL Power Rankings, Preseason Week 1: Rookie QBs steal the show
By Randy Gurzi
The first play ever for Trevor Lawrence in the NFL did not go very well. Taking the snap at his own 15-yard line, Lawrence was sacked by Sheldon Day and fumbled the ball. While he was able to keep possession, it was a less-than-ideal start to his Jacksonville Jaguars career.
Unfortunately, it could be a sign of things to come. Lawrence, who rebounded nicely and played very well, looked the part but had very little help around him at times. He finished 6-of-9 for 71 yards but the pocket was collapsing too quickly for him.
This isn’t meant to bash the team, because they’re trending in the right direction. They have a lot of young talent and Lawrence looks to be the real deal. Lawrence did also show a nice rapport with Marvin Jones who had 52 yards on just three catches.
They also got 52 yards from Tavon Austin who was playing very late in the game but still looked to be a playmaker that they could use.
Having said all this, the elephant in the room is Tim Tebow. There is a legion of fans who want to see him succeed now that he’s moved to tight end but he looked lost and even blocked his own teammate at one point — while leading with the crown of his helmet.
It would be surprising to see the Jags really threaten in their division in 2021, but they at least got the most important position figured out. Finally.
