NFL Power Rankings, Preseason Week 1: Rookie QBs steal the show
By Randy Gurzi
A lot of eyes were on Zach Wilson as the New York Jets rookie quarterback got his first NFL action on Saturday against their roommates, the New York Giants. The Jets were technically the road team in this one and pulled out a 12-7 win but that’s not what was important. What mattered is how their young quarterback did.
The success, or lack thereof, in New York will fall on the shoulders of the No. 2 overall pick and his first showing was decent, which is enough to instill some confidence since he simply did what he was supposed to do. And as Steve Serby of the New Tork Post says, the big plays will come but the baby steps are what matter now.
"“He showed an understanding of what was expected of him, seemed in command of the huddle, didn’t make any shake-your-head decisions … and if he didn’t have the arm talent, he wouldn’t have been the first quarterback selected after Trevor Lawrence. The off-platform throws that will titillate Jets fans will come, but first things first. Wilson stood in there nicely as a pocket quarterback, displayed that quick release, and a ball that comes out of his hand smoothly and naturally.” — Serby, New York Post"
In all, Wilson was 6-of-9 for 63 yards and led the Jets to three points. They will hope for more in the coming games but this was a decent start for him.
