Washington Football Team tight end Sammis Reyes is seen as a project, and he’s putting in the work necessary to succeed.

The Washington Football Team had one of the more intriguing signings this offseason with the addition of Sammis Reyes. Reyes isn’t a big name, far from it actually. He’s a raw prospect but has talent and athleticism through the roof.

Reyes didn’t start playing football until after 2019, which is wild in itself. He had an incredibly impressive Pro Day, though, and teams became quite interested. It was Washington that brought him on in the end.

Now, the team looks to be much improved in 2021. They were the shocking winners of the NFC East last season. Despite that, they were far from perfect, boasting just a 7-9 record. With them focused on winning, you might think their days of taking on projects are over — but Reyes is an interesting case.

For one thing, tight end is not the deepest position for Washington. They have Logan Thomas as the starter, and he enjoyed a fantastic breakout season last year. Thomas set new career-highs in receptions (72), yards (670), and touchdowns (6) last season. However, the 30-year-old only had 35 receptions for 317 yards and two touchdowns prior to that in his career. So it’s understandable to be wary of the position in the long term.

Meanwhile, the backups aren’t exactly superstars. There is Ricky Seals-Jones (60 receptions in four seasons), Caleb Wilson (no career stats), Temarrick Hemingway (one reception for 10 yards in 21 career games), John Bates (a fourth-round pick this year) and then Sammis Reyes.

With that in mind, there’s no reason to believe Reyes is all that far behind the others when it comes to securing a spot. And it appears he’s putting in the work necessary to prove himself.

Sammis Reyes can definitely make the Washington Football Team roster as a backup.

All you have to do is look at the Twitter page of any of Washington’s main beat writers. John Keim has posted on multiple occasions himself videos or pictures with a caption “Reyes getting in extra work” or “Reyes is the last man on the field still doing drills”.

He wants this. It’s not just someone who picked up the sport and realized they were naturally gifted. Reyes wants to be great. It makes him easy to root for. No, this does not mean that he is going to be a star. Or even that he’s going to be very good. But it shows that he is going to work for it.

And at 6-foot-5, 260 pounds with insane athleticism, don’t bet against him. In Washington’s first preseason game, Reyes had two receptions for 25 yards on three targets. That’s pretty solid considering the layout of preseason games seeing everyone get limited time on the field.

Reyes still has a long way to go. First, he needs to get through the roster cuts. After that, he needs to carve out a role on the offense. He’s taking all the steps necessary to get there, though.

The Washington Football Team have a lot of weapons on offense this year. That’s not something you get to say very often. Due to that, there is less room for unknown talent than there usually is. Sammis Reyes is working extremely hard though and might just break through.
