New York Jets: 3 Players demanding attention vs. Packers in preseason
1. QB Zach Wilson
For the second time in a four-year span, the franchise used a first-round pick on a quarterback. In 2018, it was Southern Cal’s Sam Darnold via the third overall selection. Four months ago, the New York Jets used the second pick in the draft on BYU’s Zach Wilson. And he’s the latest young signal-caller that’s expected to help change the fortunes of a franchise that hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2010.
A season ago, the Jets were dead last in the league in total yards per game and scored an NFL-low 243 points. The club’s offensive unit reached the end zone just 25 times in 16 contests. In a year where most teams had few problems reaching the end zone, the Green and White failed to reach the 30-point mark in any game in 2020.
In the club’s 12-7 preseason win over the rival Giants, Wilson got the start and connected on six of his nine throws for 63 yards. He was not sacked and did not fumble and also did not record a rushing attempt. It will be interesting to see how much playing time he gets against the Packers.
