The Jacksonville Jaguars finally named Trevor Lawrence their starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
In a move that was obvious the moment Trevor Lawrence was taken No. 1 overall, the Jacksonville Jaguars have finally named him the starting quarterback. Seriously, what took so long? This was a move that most people saw coming when Urban Meyer selected the highly touted quarterback out of Clemson.
Before this decision, Lawrence was engaged in a quarterback competition amongst Gardner Minshew, who had shown promise the year before when Jacksonville bottomed out with a 1-15 record and the right to select first overall. Now, Jacksonville will progress forward with Lawrence and the true journey begins.
Given that Lawrence will have a lot to live up to and how he will be without Travis Etienne following his placement on Injured Reserve for a foot injury, the journey becomes a bit more strenuous. However, he does have other weapons available to him but, nonetheless, it’s still a tough challenge to resurrect a struggling franchise.
Trevor Lawrence was always going to be the starter; it just took too long to come to that conclusion.
Thankfully for Trevor Lawrence, he will be going against the Houston Texans in Week 1, a team that is largely viewed as one of the weaker teams in the league. In essence, Lawrence may have an opportunity to perform well right out of the gate, but that all falls on Meyer.
You do not select a quarterback first overall and sit him on the bench. While Carson Palmer was afforded such a luxury, he wound up producing well for the Cincinnati Bengals. In the case of Jacksonville and the expectations that Meyer has for himself, that was out of the question.
Also, in this day and age, you have to see what you have in a quarterback and put the requisite pieces around him to succeed. Jacksonville has made their decision, and with that, Trevor Lawrence will be playing in Week 1. The rebuilding of the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise has now begun.
