Chicago Bears: 5 Storylines to watch vs. Titans in preseason Week 3
2. Does Iyiegbuniwe stake his claim to a roster spot?
Since the Chicago Bears drafted Joel Iyiegbuniwe in the fourth round in 2018, they had high hopes for him. He hasn’t fulfilled those hopes, however. He’s in the final year of his rookie contract but hasn’t seen very many snaps on defense. Most of his time has been spent on special teams.
Chicago hoped that this was the season Iyiegbuniwe would make an impact on defense. However, they went out and signed Alec Ogletree just in case. What happened was that Ogletree played his butt off both in practice and on the field in games.
Iyiegbuniwe hasn’t made the impact expected with Ogletree doing so well. Ogletree has performed like a starter and not a backup. He’s shown to be an asset, while the question mark hanging over his head.
Iyiegbuniwe has one last game to try to impress the coaches and change the narrative on him. The coaches already know what he can do on special teams. They need to see him make plays and make an impact on defense.
If he doesn’t make an impression, Iyiegbuniwe’s time on the Chicago Bears roster could be in jeopardy. The team has more players who could help on special teams. Also, as I mentioned earlier, he was a fourth-round pick. The team expects more from a player they draft at that position.
We’ll see what Iyiegbuniwe has in him when he plays this week.
