Two young AFC teams would be potential fits for a Jaylon Smith trade

4. Jacksonville Jaguars – Trading away Joe Schobert this offseason might be an indication that the Jaguars aren’t particularly interested in a veteran linebacker. However, Jaylon Smith is younger than Schobert and might be a better fit on a defense that could use some help in the middle of the defense.

Myles Jack has star potential but has been inconsistent. Outside of him, they are banking on Damien Wilson — yet another former Cowboy — along with unproven assets to fill the depth chart. Smith could come in and be a nice complement to the athletic Jack.

Furthermore, if the reports about possibly dealing C.J. Henderson from earlier in the offseason are to be believed, Dallas is a team that would surely have interest and Smith could serve as trade bait in any possible deal.

3. New York Jets – Especially with the Carl Lawson injury, things are starting to look a bit dire for the Jets defense entering the 2021 NFL season. They could have one of the worst secondaries in the league and, outside of CJ Mosley, the inside linebacker position is hurting for proven talent, especially with Jarrad Davis also injured.

New York could potentially trade for Smith and add him to this linebacker group and make a strong push to improve their defense overall. They have a young quarterback in Zach Wilson that they want to properly develop but, for that and success to come about, they need to be competent on defense. Smith could potentially provide that and, if he doesn’t, they could cut him with a minimal cap penalty after this year.
