NFL Power Rankings, Week 1: Dolphins hurt by trade talk, Bears look foolish
By Randy Gurzi
The cliche that we always hear is that the preseason is meaningless. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Sure, the preseason doesn’t matter in the standings, the wins and losses aren’t important, and by the time the fourth quarter rolls around, we’re all tired of the local broadcasters asking what kind of sandwich a player would be if they had the choice.
But the truth is, there are some very valuable snaps to be had for some young players during these games. That was especially true for 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love.
Taken by the Green Bay Packers last season, Love was never able to play in the preseason since the league had to cancel it due to Coronavirus concerns. He was also the third quarterback on the depth chart for the Packers, so he was never even active. That meant all the work he did as a quarterback came in practices and his first simulated game experience came this year in the preseason.
He wasn’t perfect but he did play well enough to give the team hope that he could be the answer down the road — and they need an answer down the road since they have an open relationship with Aaron Rodgers where each party has one eye patrolling for their “”after partner.””
So while this preseason might not have done much to help the Packers prepare for 2021, it was still very important for them.
