4. Cam Newton could answer the Pittsburgh Steelers’ backup QB problem

Before Cam Newton re-signed with the Patriots this offseason, there was plenty of talk that the veteran quarterback should sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Yes, they are running it back with Ben Roethlisberger for another year and they hope that the veteran who has worked to get into better shape can both stay healthy and thrive.

Health hasn’t been guaranteed for Big Ben in recent years, though. Last season, he weathered an elbow injury that appeared quite painful and, though he is being called healthy, that’s not the type of injury you want to see from a quarterback who’s near 40 years old having. It’s also not something that getting in shape is wholly going to help with.

Pittsburgh is keeping Dwayne Haskins as they are trying to help the former first-round pick reclaim his career. But between him and Mason Rudolph, we know what these players are. This is a roster — aside from the offensive line, potentially — built to win. That’s not happening if Rudolph or Haskins has to take over for Roethlisberger.

Newton would give them a better chance for success in the case of injuries. He could provide the big-bodied presence at quarterback while also feeding the talented wide receivers in the short areas and adding value with his legs. If the money is there, this would make a ton of sense.
