2. Cam Newton could back up another rookie with the New York Jets

Unlike in New England, when the New York Jets took a quarterback in the first round, there was no competition in training camp and the preseason. This was Zach Wilson’s job from the moment that he heard his name called at No. 2 overall. And to be sure, that’s looked smart by the Jets to this point.

Wilson hasn’t been perfect in the preseason but he’s been better than some expected, especially after there were early reports that he was struggling in training camp. His big arm is a clear asset but he also seemingly had a nice grasp of the offense and didn’t look overwhelmed by what was being thrown at him in the NFL.

But quarterback health is never guaranteed and the depth chart behind Wilson for Gang Green doesn’t leave many fans very confident. Mike White was fine in the preseason but he was cut by the Cowboys not long ago, which indicates this isn’t a particularly special player at the QB2 spot.

Bringing in Cam Newton would provide the Jets with some security for Wilson. The rookie is making a huge jump from BYU to the NFL and the physical rigors associated with that might get to him. For New York to have success in 2021, their offense must be good. Newton would help assure them that can continue if the rookie were forced to miss time.
