Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 40. Boomer Esiason

Stats:

  • 37,920 passing yards
  • 247 touchdowns
  • 184 interceptions

One of the rare few MVP winners that didn’t get enshrined into the NFL Hall of Fame, Boomer Esiason was still one helluva quarterback when he was in his physical prime.

In six consecutive seasons, Esiason threw for over 3,000 yards. His completion percentage left much to be desired though, always falling somewhere in the mid to low 50s.

In 1988, Esiason had everything going for him, he led the league in passer rating with a 97.4. He was also amongst the league’s best in passing yards with 3,572 yards and 28 touchdowns. The Bengals would make a surprise trip to the Super Bowl that season but would lose a heart breaker to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 20-16.

Esiason would play several more seasons in the league for numerous teams. His individual numbers were always rated fairly higher amongst his peers but team success never quite followed.
