Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 38. Norm Van Brocklin

Stats:

  • 23,611 passing yards
  • 173 touchdowns
  • 178 interceptions

If you looked at his raw numbers, you’d have a hard time believing that Norm Van Brocklin was actually any good. But, considering the time in which he played, his stats made him stand out amongst his peers.

In only his second season in the league and first as a full-time starter in 1950, Brocklin was already chosen to his first Pro Bowl. He’d then back up the hype but leading the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl in 1951. For the next six seasons, every Pro Bowl roster had Brocklin’s name plastered on it.

Brocklin was the true definition of a player who went out at the very top of his game. In 1960, Brocklin again made another Pro Bowl roster, his ninth. He was also selected to his first All-Pro team as well after throwing for 2,471 yards and 24 touchdowns. It was in that final year that Brocklin led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl ring while taking home his one and only league MVP.

Just when it seemed as though Brocklin had plenty left in the tank, he hung up his cleats and left many of us wondering how long he could’ve dominated.
