Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 36. Y.A. Tittle

Stats:

  • 33,790 passing yards
  • 242 passing touchdowns
  • 248 interceptions

While the 1960s were primarily a time where quarterbacks stuffed the football into the belly of their running backs and allowed them to take over, Y.A. Tittle had other ideas. In his mid-20s, Tittle routinely threw the ball for over 2,000 yards, then considered monster numbers.

No matter the player, the older he becomes, the less effective they ultimately get. This is particularly true once an athlete hits their late 30s. Yet, as Tittle continued to age, he got better and better.

During his aged 36 and 37 season, Tittle was chosen to back-to-back Pro Bowls and made consecutive All-Pro squads as well. During his aforementioned season in which he was 37 years of age, Tittle led the league in several statistical categories including completion percentage with 60.2%, touchdown passes with 36, and quarterback rating with 104.8. He was also given his one and only MVP award.

If there was one major knock on the career of Tittle, it was his failure to get things done when the lights shined brightest. With five appearances in the postseason, Tittle failed to advance past the first round. He was also a disaster with the ball in his hands, throwing four touchdowns to 14 interceptions.
