Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 34. Joe Theismann

Stats:

  • 25,206 passing yards
  • 160 touchdowns
  • 138 interceptions

Nothing appeared to truly stand out for quarterback Joe Theismann. During his time in the pro ranks, he played somewhat decently.

He was a career-long backup during his first four seasons in the league but was given a crack at the starting job for the then, Washington Redskins. He didn’t impress. Theismann threw for 2,593 yards, 13 touchdowns and 18 interceptions and completed a God-awful 47.9% of his passes.

Yet, the more he played, the better he got. In his third to last season in the league, everything finally clicked for him. He led the Redskins to a 14-2 record and threw for over 3,700 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. For his career, Theismann has only 160 touchdowns to 138 interceptions and his passing yards don’t rank in the top 75 all-time.

Regardless of that, Theismann played better as he aged and had a decent career, especially during the tail end.
